In fact, a moderate amount of stress can actually improve performance by increasing alertness and focus.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="font-size: 100%;"&gt;As stress begins to rise, performance typically improves. A certain level of pressure helps pilots stay engaged, attentive, and responsive to the task at hand. This is why a pilot may perform very well during challenging situations such as a checkride or a demanding approach.       <description>&lt;p&gt;In the majority of cases, water in the cabin is not a huge emergency as most leaks are typically small. However, large leaks that risk sinking your boat can happen. Knowing how to handle leaks is one of the safety topics covered in the ASA 103 test, and generally a good thing to know.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h2 style="font-size: 28px;"&gt;What to do if you discover a leak&lt;/h2&gt;&lt;p&gt;The actions you take and what order you execute them in will depend on circumstances, but a good rule of thumb to &lt;strong&gt;first stop or slow major leaks&lt;/strong&gt; by plugging them up using any means necessary, and &lt;strong&gt;then proceed to pumping&lt;/strong&gt;. The faster you can do both of these things the better, so if you have crew members onboard make sure to alert them so that they can help with these tasks. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;h2 style="font-size: 28px;"&gt;Identifying the source of the leak&lt;/h2&gt;&lt;p&gt;If your boat has not had some kind of accident, such as running around, the most likely source of the leak will be the holes that already exist in your boat: the through-all fittings. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;h3 style="font-size: 24px;"&gt;Through-all fitting leaks&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;p&gt;These fittings are devices, usually a combination of threaded pipes and washers, which are secured to the hull and allow the flow of water into or out of the boat. Boats have through-all fittings both below and above the waterline, depending on their function. Over time, wear and corrosion can result in these failing and leaking. Below the water line through-all fittings, such as the engine coolant intake, are more likely to leak simply because of being below the water. This condition is known as hypothermia, and it is something that sailors may encounter given the wet and cold conditions in which they operate. I don't worry too much about hypothermia while sailing in the warm British Virgin Islands, however it should be noted that hypothermia can develop even when temperatures are not very low. Multiple people have died in my home state of Colorado falling in the water sailing in lake Dillon, a high alpine lake where air temperature can warm but the water frigid. In New England where I grew up, as in many other places, the risk increases in the spring and fall when the weather starts to cool down. The longer the exposure and the more wet and cold it is, the higher the risk of developing hypothermia.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h2 style="text-align: center; font-size: 100%;"&gt;&lt;em&gt;Lake Dillon in Colorado&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;&lt;h2 style="font-size: 28px;"&gt;Causes of Hypothermia&lt;/h2&gt;&lt;p style="font-size: 100%;"&gt;Exposure to cold is what leads to Hypothermia, especially in wet environments. Water cools the body about 25 times faster than air, so a person is most likely to become hypothermic if they  fall in cold water or get wet while onboard.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h2 style="font-size: 28px;"&gt;Avoiding Hypothermia&lt;/h2&gt;&lt;p&gt;Avoiding heat loss is the main goal. Do everything you can to stay dry and to avoid falling in the water. This may include wearing a wet suit to help keep your body warm, as well as wearing gloves and a hat to prevent heat loss from your head and hands.       <description>&lt;p&gt;After living with my family for a week aboard a sailboat in the beautiful British Virgin Islands, and watching the captain (my father) expertly handle our rental catamaran that he had never sailed before, a thought popped into my head: How can I learn to do this?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Five years later, and after one failed attempt of learning how to sail at a local community sailing school, I now have my ASA 101 and 103 certifications, allowing me to captain and charter my own boat at many different destinations.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h2 style="font-size: 28px;"&gt;How to get certified&lt;/h2&gt;&lt;p&gt;The first thing you'll want to do is find an &lt;a href="https://asa.com/find-sailing-school/" target="_blank"&gt;ASA certified sailing school&lt;/a&gt; near you. Living in land locked Colorado, I thought that might be difficult but it turns out that ASA sailing schools can be found in 38 US states, as well as the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. I was fortunate enough to have Victoria Sailing School less than an hour of where I live.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;You will need to pass both a practical and a written exam&lt;/strong&gt; to obtain your ASA 101, 103, and/or 104 certifications. The most common option,  which is the one that I did, is to sign up for a class at a sailing school. With this option, you'll attend some theory classes (mine were a mix of online and in person) as well as on the water practical sessions. During the practical sessions, our instructors taught us and had us practice different skill sets ranging from jibing to anchoring.       <description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Describe the procedures for reducing a sail using a mainsail reefing system and a roller furling jib&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Reefing consists of making your sail smaller by partially lowering it. On the mainsail, this is achieved by releasing the mail halyard, which lowers the head of the sail, and by essentially creating a new tack and clew to hold the bottom of the sail down.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Basic layout of the sail&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Example of reefing a J/22 boat&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Let's look at the reefing system on a J22 sailboat. Our boat uses a jiffy reefing system, also known as slab reefing. This common reefing system works by taking out a "slab" out of a sail. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Conceptually, reefing is very simple. You lower the top of sail and then get rid of the excess at the bottom. Lowering the mainsail is simply done by releasing the main halyard to drop the sail by a couple feet, but how do you know when to stop? &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Our sail happens to only have 1 reef on it, which we know by looking at the number of rows of cringles on the sail (i.e. the grommets). For the reefed sail to be functional, you need to secure its new bottom which is achieved by tightening the reef line. The reef line is connected to a the sail cringles (both tack and clew), so when you tighten the line it pulls the what is now the new bottom of the sail down, tensioning the luff and leech.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Going back to our question, you should stop lowering the mainsail once the reefing cringle at the tack is lined up with the boom. The bottom edge of a sail is called the &lt;strong&gt;foot&lt;/strong&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;A useful trick to help you remember the difference between luff and leech is to picture a sail in your mind, and then think about the first thing that comes to mind when you think leech or luff. Often, people may think of the blood sucking leech animal. Picture the animal on the aft (back) edge of the  sail. Research shows that mental images like this are much easier to remember, especially when they are vivid or evoque emotions, such as imaging a disgusting blood suck leech on the back of your sail.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Halyard&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;A halyard is any line (i.e. rope) used to raise or lower a sail or other object, like a flag. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Boom Vang&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The boom vang is responsible for holding the boom down, giving the sailor control over the shape of the sail. When sailing close to the wind, such as on a closed haul, the mainsheet will usually do a good enough job applying downward force on the boom. However, as you move away from the wind (i.e. reaching or running), the mainsheet exerts less and less force on the boom and this is where the boom vang becomes useful. Trimming the boom vang correctly will get more performance out of the mainsail — make sure not to overtighen it however, a good tug is usually sufficient.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;Thank you for visting us!
