ASA 101 Navigation Rules

Look-out, Rule 5

This rule is simple: stay on the lookout for other vessels and other risks in general to avoid collision.

Sailing vessels with the wind on different sides (starboard / port), Rule 12(a)(i)

The boat sailing portside (wind is coming from the port side, so the boom is on the starboard side) must give way to the boat on a starboard tack.

Sailing vessels with the wind on same side (leeward / windward), Rule 12(a)(ii)

If you are on the same tack, then the windward boat (the boat that is upwind) is the give-way vessel, while the leeward boat is the stand-on boat.
